There once was a very haughty princess who had all the princes of the world at her feet, and who turned them all down with disdain. Like all spoiled young ladies, she was restless and unhappy. A new swineherd in her father’s employ particularly infuriated her, for he was happy with nothing in life but a rose and a nightingale in a cage, while she was unhappy with all the riches in the world. In the best fairy tale tradition, the swineherd is of course a princely suitor in disguise who sets about to win the heart of the princess. ‘That very rare thing, a really charming children’s play which is not outside the scope of a group of intelligent children’. - The Observer.
