GLASS SLIPPER, THE

Shades of Liliom in this gentle comedy, premièred in 1924 along with Mima and The Play’s the Thing, which concerns a suburban Cinderella, a simple servant girl whose head has been filled with romantic ideas by seeing too many plays at the National Theatre. Her yearned-for Prince Charming is a middle-aged carpenter, a lodger in the boarding-house where she works. The pathos of her love is cross-cut with Molnár’s usual sharp and witty observations - particularly in the Act III confrontation in the police station.
