A long off-Broadway success premiered at the Old Red Lion theatre in London, this exceptionally bright and witty play explores the pitfalls facing New York’s young swinging singles as they deal with the dilemma of commitment versus freedom. Philip, his girlfriend Lisa and Michael meet each weekend in Central Park where all three race their bicycles. Philip, intent on playing the field, vigorously avoids commitment whilst Lisa secretly longs for a more exclusive relationship. Michael, just married, defends monogamy - ‘why go out for a hamburger when you can have a steak at home?’ - that is until his wife runs off with another man. As the play progresses and the friendship between the three cyclists devlops, so events take an unexpected turn. By the end of the play the wheel has come round full circle.
“On the play’s opening night roars of laughter indicated just how many of the audience were all too familiar with the various arguments and ideas put forward - witty and perceptive, a thoroughly convincing look at emotional involvement ‘80s style that manages to be both poignant and funny”.
