The Pilgrim’s Progress was commisioned in 1928 by the BBC Orchestra and Choral Society, and is based on the Christian allegory The Pilgrim’s Progress from This World to That Which Is to Come, written by John Bunyan and published in 1678. Christian, an ‘everyman’ character, is the protagonist of the allegory, which centers itself in his journey from his hometown, the City of Destruction (this world), to the Celestial City (that which is to come, ie. Heaven) atop of Mount. Zion.
