Kathrin, Die
Korngold’s fifth and penultimate opera, Die Kathrin, was premiered in Stockholm in October 1939 after its scheduled Vienese premiere was cancelled due to Korngold’s Jewish ancestry. The opera is an archetypal story of love, at first torn apart by the difficulties of the world, but which survives through the power of steadfast devotion and optimism. It is based on Heinrich Eduard Jacob’s 1931 novel The Maid of Aachen, and tells of love between a French soldier (Francois) and a German servant girl (Kathrin).
