Little-known Kálmán operetta receives performances in Chicago
06 June 2012
The Chicago Folks Operetta, one of the many independent repertory companies in the US, is staging two works that do not often receive an airing.
Kálmán’s 1926 “big top” operetta, The Circus Princess (Die Zirkusprinzessin), receives its Chicago premiere this month. John von Rhein of the Chicago Tribune says “Although not as well known as the composer’s The Gypsy Princess and Countess Maritza, Zirkusprinzessin is awash with the Hungarian melodies, Viennese waltz rhythms and romantic intrigues that are hallmarks of the Kalman style. There’s even a circus act or two thrown in.”
