Schmidt Piano Quintets for the Left Hand - available for the first time!
26 November 2010
The Austrian pianist Paul Wittgenstein (1887-1961) lost his arm at the age of twenty-seven during the First World War. He was. however, determined to continue his career, and great composers such as Ravel and Strauss subsequently wrote concertos for Wittgenstein. He gained a great international reputation as a result.
For many years the three piano quintets composed for Wittgenstein by Franz Schmidt - in G, A and Bb - were only available in a two-hand arrangement. Now, for the very first time, the three quintets have been published in their original left-hand version.
