HOUGH NYT

Acclaimed pianist Stephen Hough’s Piano Sonata III: Trinitas received its first performance last week at London’s Barbican centre, and has subsequently received rave reviews.

Receiving its premiere amongst a programme of works by Lizst, Schubert and Franck, The Guardian’s Martin Kettle writes that Hough’s own sonata “more than held its own in such exalted pianistic company” (full review HERE), while The Telegraph’s John Allison describes the sonata as “virtuosic” and “an ear-catchingly likeable work” (full review HERE)

Frances Wilson, writing for Bachtrack.com, describes the new sonata as “accessible” and “witty quirky and playful”, and goes on to say that “it is exciting to know that such variety and imagination is readily available for other pianists to tackle and enjoy” (full review HERE)

The full concert is available to listen to on the BBC Radio 3 website for the next three weeks (click HERE). Hough’s Piano Sonata III begins at 01:07:45.
