THE ART OF JOAN SUTHERLAND
This ten volume series (started in 1985) is a complete overview of, as the title says, the art of Joan Sutherland. It is a collection of Italian, French and English songs from opera and oratorio, chosen and edited by Joan Sutherland and Richard Bonynge, with cadenzas and notes by Richard Bonynge.
The cadenzas and interpretations of Sutherland were firmly based on eighteenth and nineteenth century performing traditions, and serve as a guide to the art of singing. These volumes have important notes on breathing, interpretation, embellishments and dynamics that can be used as a guide to performing styles of the music included in the volumes.
