New CD release - Malcolm Williamson

29 April 2013

Oz Piano

Malcolm Williamson’s Concerto for Two Pianos and String Orchestra is a work that doesn’t often get an airing but in 2013, which is the 10th anniversary of the death of Williamson, both ABC Classics and Hyperion have new releases.

In it’s Discovery series, ABC Classics has reissued its well-known recording (coupled with concerti by Ross Edwards and Peter Sculthorpe) of this wonderful double concerto. The bonus of this recording of the Williamson is that it has the composer at the piano! Simon Campion is the other pianist and the strings of the Tasmanian Symphony are under the baton of Barry Tuckwell.

Malcolm Williamson’s concerto for two pianos reflects his own virtuosity at the keyboard, while blending musical ideas from Europe and the US – Stravinsky, Bartók and Sibelius but also Richard Rodgers, George Gershwin and Leonard Bernstein – to create a uniquely Australian sound world.

Available now trough the ABC Shop and selected international dealers.
